From Marie Langley

Geraldine has invited me to write a couple of paragraphs for the Essential Resources blog. “Sure,” I said, “I can do that.” But here I am, sitting in front of my laptop and… I’m not quite sure what to write.

Something about my educational qualifications and experience? Well, I have a BA from Canterbury University and a Master of Teaching and Learning from the Christchurch College of Education. With close to twenty years of teaching experience, I was Head of English at an Area School, Deputy principal for seven years… but, hey, you can read all that in the author profile on the Essential Resources web site.

Why did I stop teaching? Mainly because it seemed like the right time for me. I knew that I wanted to try doing something else at some point and suddenly it felt like time to get on with it, while I still had the belief that I could make it happen. My “something else” dream was writing. Ask any writer and you’ll hear how hard it is to make a living in that field. I was very lucky that Geraldine and Nicola at Essential Resources offered me a great opportunity to earn at least some of that living. As well as having the opportunity to write, I’m still able to draw on all my educational experience – for me, that’s an essential combination of skills and resources.

Something about my work for Essential Resources? I started working for ER in 2003 and have done a bit of editing and other general tasks but mainly I’ve been writing books, quite a lot of books for Essential Resources over the past eight years. As you can see from the ER catalogue, a number of the titles come in series such as Believe You Can Achieve and Journal Journeys. I love writing for different levels and offering challenges and learning opportunities for various learning styles. It’s always a thrill to see the books in their final, published form. It’s also very exciting to see Essential Resources moving into digital publishing and to know that ER books now end up in schools all round the world. Brilliant!

But now it’s time I got on with writing instead of blogging – more books to write, more stories to create, another deadline looming. Bring it on!

Marie's books are available on our website, where they can be previewed using our online viewer.
